What have we been up to?
So much has been happening in room 207 (our music room) since January! Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades have been focusing on rhythm units where they learn to decode, read, and write notation.
This third grader created their own rhythm using the Seesaw app and recorded themselves reading it! This is the last step in our music units, where students create, write, and read their composition.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade have also been learning a song called Miss Mary Mack. There are different variations of this song, but the clapping game is generally the same. We first learned it as an echo song, which helps students practice pitch matching their singing to mine. The clapping game reinforces motor skills like right versus left and crossing the midline. It also reinforces steady beat in the body as well as musical form and expression by trying to match the clapping pattern to the correct part of the song.
Most importantly, playing games with others gives students positive peer interaction, and they are reinforcing social-emotional skills like working together, helping another, choosing a partner politely, including others, and a sense of accomplishment when they have mastered the task. If you notice in the video, every child is laughing and smiling!!!

Second grade completed their very first musical called Barnyard Moosical, and it was a knee-slapping good time!
First grade is preparing for their musical show-and-tell performance, where we will get to show families all the activities we do in music class, and tell why they are important!

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
December in the music room is one of our favorite months out of the year. We listen to and compare different pieces from the Nutcracker Ballet by Tchaikovsky, as well as learn a bit about the art form and how it differs from other performing arts. We love to use ribbons, scarves, instruments, sticks, and even the parachute to experience the form of the music. Watch below to see a third grade class performing the Russian Dance, Trepak, with ribbon wands.
Arioso Land!
October 6, 2017
This school year is off to a exceptionally musical start! Our students are learning how to communicate in Arioso Land this year. Arioso Land is a place where everyone only uses their singing voice, so everything you need to say must be sung! Kindergarten through Fifth Grade are practicing song improvisation on neutral syllables by humming. This activity allows students impulsive creative freedom where they can use their musical experience to improvise unique songs on the spot. Here are some student examples of this activity in Second Grade where students get to have a hummingbird conversation with Mrs. Montier:

2016 - 2017Our Favorite Singing Games! |
Recorder Duets! This year, 5th grade students have been reviewing known notes and rhythms on recorder by playing duets with a partner. We practiced playing "Hot Cross Buns" and "Merrily We Roll Along" then added harmony parts to the songs. Our next song will be "Mary Had a Little Lamb" which we will add a low harmony part to.
|
We learn about instruments and how they work using The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.
Second grade practices finding the notation match to a rhythm that they heard.
With the Tune Train app, we can compose songs, see the notation it creates, and explore different styles of accompaniments. We love sharing our creations with others!
Staff Wars is our favorite way to practice reading notes on the staff in 4th and 5th grade!
|
We collaborate with centers! Our students love to work in small groups during music center days! Often we get to use music apps on iPads that test our pitch matching, instrument identification, rhythm reading, and staff reading.
We practice identifying instruments and their names with this card matching center.
We love to create rhythms and have our friends try to say and clap them!
Twister is even more challenging when you have to read the rhythm first!
